Harry Luxton

My name is Harry Luxton. I am an artist with a disability but I don't let that stop me from making art. I make art that relates to life with a disability. I use my wheelchair to make art as it is an extension of myself and I rely on it to move about.

What do you know about disability? I am a disabled artist which shows that just because you are disabled doesn’t mean you can’t be an artist. I use sculpture, painting and film to convey my creative ideas. Colour is an important part of my work, which I use to be bold and make a statement. I even paint on plaster sculptures to give them more colour. I make work revolving around my wheelchair and the tyres, which are my legs. I try to highlight that being different isn't always a bad thing and I try to not let my disability get in the way of me making art. I direct my assisstant to help make art that I am not physically able to make. I have found alternative ways to paint, as I am not able to paint with my hands anymore. I paint and do printmaking using my wheelchair; which I have full control over the marks that are made. This makes me feel like I have full artist integrity. I am fascinated by fabric and how it drapes and falls and how it can look and feel against the skin. I am looking to explore this further. This has been inspired by a drawing I recently made on a bed sheet; which I displayed by draping it as I loved the creases in the fabric. This idea was inspired by the work of artist Rosemary Mayer.
